Stacey Abrams – Our modern day heroine of the vote

A Spelman College graduate and attorney, Stacey Abrams responded to the sabotage of her run for governor of Georgia by bringing hundreds of thousands of people of color to the polls in time for the 2020 election. Stacey understands that our votes have the power to determine election outcomes. She understands that our people, when apprised of the facts, are most likely to use our strong family and cultural values to pick our leaders. People of color are now and have always been focused on The Big Truth. Our democracy is in danger of being lost because Republican politicians are giving up all sense of pride to keep power. In the adoption of The Big Lie, Trump supporters in government all over the United States are using the playbook of denial to keep racial apartheid in place.

One would think that access to the internet would cause politicians to hesitate to put out patently false rumors, knowing that we can just look up the facts. But the internet is flooded with misinformation and outright lies. Because her opponent in the Georgia race actually controlled the election in which over a million of likely democratic voters were disenfranchised, Ms. Abrams feels that the governorship was actually stolen from her. Republicans and their supporters in the state of Georgia continue maneuvering to reduce the potential of people of color to vote in upcoming elections. Not one to take her toys and quietly recede into the background, Stacey has come out fighting, with facts, education, and a strong sense of purpose and fairness. Stacey has shown us how to handle “defeat” with well managed power. A Yale Law School graduate, she is teaching us to claim and protect our votes, our “citizen’s gold”. Stacey’s Fair Fight team has mobilized, especially, the voices & votes of black women.

The next time you are challenged with resistance and defeat, think of sister Stacey. Do your homework. Think about what needs to change in order for the next brother or sister to claim their victories. If it’s as individual as your one vote or as sweeping as all the votes in your county, state or region, get out there and do your part!

Wow! What black women’s activism can do ala Stacey Abrams. Revel in her success. Follow her steps. Never again feel that you have no choices. That you can’t be heard. Look how Stacey did it. Our democracy survived (so far) because this former representative of the Georgia state house led the way to democratic victory.

Protecting the Black Body through voting

The world has been given a closeup view of how the black body (this time in the forms of George Floyd and Breanna Taylor) continues to be disrespected and often extinguished by those who are supposed to be our protectors. This is what can clearly be seen in the videos of Mr. Floyd’s murder. This is what is obvious in examining the details of the murder of a sleeping Breonna Taylor. But this is also what every black person knows to be true. We are watched, hunted and blocked in every environment, be that along lonely rural roads or in a luxury retailer’s men’s department in New York City. How this affects the black mind is of utmost enduring importance.

How has this assault on the black body been addressed by the government which we form through our votes, the businesses that we allow to exist through our dollars and the service organizations for which we provide the labor? Our former president had suggested that we be met with dogs and weapons, not unlike Bull Connors, an ignorant, racist icon of 50 years ago. Our local police departments are saying “Well, it shouldn’t have happened but we’re continuing to work on a more” enlightened” force. People of color and those of open mind and heart know what they are seeing: the result of centuries of ignorant domination of the kind-hearted, the meek, the suppressed and the hopeful. These problems exist for all blacks, regardless of location, occupation, education, religion or income. That means that racism is alive and well everywhere. So we have to be observant, aware, prepared. We have to determine effective ways to deliver our messages to our representatives. Our power is in our voices and our numbers. Ally your voice with those who share your goals. Support those organizations and programs that will step out in front and speak up to elected officials. Expect your church to speak up. Serve God through insisting on your government and institutions treating you fairly. Vote! Vote! Vote!

Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States

To the relief of probably the entire world, California Senator, AKA and Howard University graduate, Kamala Harris and former Vice President Joe Biden have become, respectively, the Vice President and President. After four years of chaos and mayhem, ineptitude and inhumanity, America – especially Black America – can breathe a little. It has been speculated that the Trump years – the Covid years – have resulted in emotional trauma for many Americans. Kamala, by opening the door to the highest government position in the land ever achieved by a woman, affirms for many little black girls, that the sky is the limit. For the rest of us, we know that our interests, our needs are being brought to the table.

Keeping our eyes on Medicaid & Medicare

In just a week our lives have been turned into that of spectators watching a magic show. We know the actor is performing a trick right in front of our eyes. We know that if we get distracted for a second, he can pull it off.  In this first week chaos of  immigrant banning, Mexico insulting,  government job firing and threats against urban culture, we could miss some huge moves.

In a NY Times op-ed, Gene Sperling,   an economist and former Director of the National Economic Council and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy under presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama: “If Donald J. Trump decides to gut the basic guarantee of Medicare and revamp its structure so that it hurts older and sicker people, Democrats must and will push back hard. But if Democrats focus too much of their attention on Medicare, they may inadvertently assist the quieter war on Medicaid — one that could deny health benefits to millions of children, seniors, working families and people with disabilities. Of the two battles, the Republican effort to dismantle Medicaid is more certain. It would take only three Republican senators thinking twice about the wisdom of block grants and per capita caps to put a halt to the coming war on Medicaid. DON’T MISS THIS.” …..continue
