Therapy etiquette

Therapy is an environment that may be unlike any other. While you want your therapist to be a good listener who allows you to express yourself without fear of judgment, your therapist may be methodical in adhering to a routine in terms of how the office is set up, when you meet, how topics are introduced and how each session starts and ends.

Your therapist may see you only at the appointed time. If you have access to the inner office you should expect that the therapist will come out and get you rather than having you knock on their door. Most therapists are not available by phone just prior to your appointment time to discuss last minute details. The therapist’s office should be private, quiet and professional. Some therapists will have you pay at the beginning of the sessions so that extra time is not used when your session has ended. Some therapists collect at the end of the session or bill monthly. Monthly billing is less common than it used to be.
